A week in the Old Mill District

The Old Mill District wakes early. By seven the bakery on Tanner Row has a queue, cyclists are streaming along the canal path, and the old brick chimneys catch the first light.

Most homes here are former warehouse apartments with tall windows and exposed beams, alongside a few streets of narrow terraces that predate the mills. Prices reward buyers who want character over space.

Weekdays

The commute is the district's quiet strength. The tram stop is a five-minute walk from most front doors, and the canal path is a flat fifteen minutes by bike to the city centre. Evenings centre on the small cluster of cafés and the climbing gym in the old dye works.

Weekends

On Saturday the car park behind the library becomes a market of produce, bread and second-hand books. Sundays are for the towpath and the pub with the open fire.

The downside is noise: converted buildings can carry sound, and Friday nights are lively. Visit at different hours before you commit.
